Is Wine Good For You?
Most wine drinkers would happily admit that wine is great for helping you to feel relaxed, especially after a tough, stressful day at work. There’s nothing quite like settling down in front of a good meal or curling up on the sofa in front of your favourite TV show and sipping a nice glass of wine. But, is wine good for you? This feeling of wellbeing alone is undoubtedly very good for you psychologically, but we have little doubt that the vast majority of our customers will have read an article or a report at some time about the benefits of wine with regards to your physical health as well as your mental health.
It’s a topic of conversation that often pops up when our team speak to customers at the various wine shows and events that Premier Estates Wine attends throughout the year. It sounds a little bit unbelievable to some, how can a drink containing alcohol which is so enjoyable possibly be good for you physically?
The Science Behind The Claims
Claims regarding the health benefits of wine have actually been made for hundreds of years and wine is widely regarded as the oldest known medicine to man. Although the ancients knew nothing of the alcohol or anti-oxidant components of alcohol, they knew enough, through observation, to use wine as an antiseptic for wounds, a sedative for those in pain or distress and wine was also applied to the bodies of those with a fever as a cooling agent.
The question, “Is wine good for you?” has also been asked by practitioners and researchers of modern medicine ever since the ability to analyse the chemical makeup of liquids was originally devised and enhanced. The old saying, “Everything in moderation” is certainly applicable here, as most people know that drinking too much wine, or indeed too much of anything, is bad for you. No-one enjoys a hang-over brought on by over-indulgence!
Recent, research using modern techniques into the health benefits of wine, has resulted in the following undeniable facts:
Reduction of cardiac arrest risk - Wine drinkers who drink in moderation and according to health directives, and who have high blood pressure, are 30 percent less likely to have a cardiac arrest than those who don’t drink wine according to a 16-year Harvard School of Public Health study.
Lowers the risk of suffering a stroke - The risk of having a blood clot related stroke falls by about 50 percent in those who consume wine in moderation, according to a 8 year Columbia University study which was published in Stroke in 2006.
Reduces the risk of colon cancer – Wine drinkers who drink in moderation (especially red) cut the risk of their suffering from colon cancer by 45 percent according to a 4 year Stony Brook University study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology in 2005.
- Slows Down Brain Function Decline - Brain function declines at a slower rate in those who drink wine in moderation, as opposed to those who don’t drink, according to a Columbia University study published in Neuroepidemiology, 2006.
So here we have facts backed up by legitimate research giving a very positive answer to our question, “Is wine good for you?” The health benefits don’t end here either, there are many more specific, positive health benefits of drinking wine in moderation which are also bolstered by sound research projects. So, you certainly don’t need an excuse to enjoy a glass of Australian Shiraz or Californian Chardonnay. In fact, you probably should!
